Slaves of Sin and Sons of Satan

October 13, 2013 Speaker: Ken Ramey

Topic: We sin because we are sinners Passage: John 8:31–47

Sunday Service
John 8:31-47
In this passage, Jesus not only implied that the Jews were slaves of sin, but what's far worse, He identified them as sons of Satan. These are TWO CHARGES you never want to be accused of even though many people are guilty of these two things.
1.  IMPLICATION: SLAVES OF SIN (vv. 31-36)
Jesus knew the hearts of the people and He knew that some of His disciples were not true followers. These people eventually would leave Him and did not continue to obey His teachings (Matthew 28:19-20). Those who love and follow Jesus will remain obedient to His teachings (John 14:15).
One important thing that Jesus taught was that we sin because we are sinners, and if we continually or habitually sin, it demonstrates slavery to sin. Instead of being a slave to sin, it was made possible to be a slave to righteousness because Christ paid the full penalty of sin, which broke its bondage over us (Romans 6:15). Jesus removed the chains of sin so that we are now free from the power and penalty of sin (2 Peter 2:19).
2.  IDENTIFICATION: SONS OF SATAN (vv. 37-47)
Jesus identified those who were in bondage to sin as sons of Satan because they desired to murder Him. As such, they were living in obedience to Satan instead of by the commandments of God (Romans 2:28, 9:6). Not everyone who claimed to be a descendent of Abraham shared Abraham's  faith and belief in God. Jesus declared that spiritual lineage is not sufficient for salvation, for even some of the descendants of Abraham rejected the Son of God and lived in disobedience to the teachings of God's Son (Galatians 3:29).
Thank God for sending His Son to free you from the penalty and power of sin. Ask Him to help you apply your freedom from sin (cf. Romans 6:6-11) by mortifying it with the Spirit's help (cf. Romans 8:13).
