Sunday Service

John 14:7-14

In order to comfort His disciples in light of His imminent departure, Jesus explained THREE PRIVILEGES that would be theirs as a result of Him leaving them. These privileges should encourage the hearts of all those who follow Him as their Lord and Savior.

1. WE CAN PERCEIVE THE FATHER (vv. 7-11)
The conceptual truth of the Trinity is difficult for us to understand because there is no perfect analogy to illustrate it within our physical realm. But because Jesus is the perfect image of the invisible God, we can know what God is like (Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:1-3). We must see Jesus as God in order to have eternal life (Acts 20:21), thus, those who have seen and known Jesus have also known God. Jesus is God manifest and our response to Jesus’ claim to be God will determine our eternal destiny.

2. WE CAN PERFORM GREAT WORKS FOR THE FATHER (v. 12)
Jesus expected His disciples to carry on the work that He had begun. Moreover, He expected them to accomplish even greater things in His name. This didn’t necessarily pertain to signs and miracles (i.e., Acts 5:12, 2 Corinthians 12:12), but to the reach of the gospel throughout the entire world and the numbers of people that they would lead to salvation. Christ’s ministry was multiplied through His disciples. Indeed, we who share the gospel today are also part of the ‘greater works’ that Christ spoke of.

3. WE CAN PRAY TO THE FATHER (vv. 13-14)
Jesus’ disciples left everything to follow Him, and thus were completely dependent on Him. So, when Jesus announced His departure, He needed to comforted them that He would continue to guide them from Heaven and that prayer would become the means by which they would communicate with Him. Prayer is the means by which we can communicate with our heavenly Father at any time of the day or night (Romans 8:27; Hebrews 7:25).

Thank the Father for revealing Himself to you through His Son Jesus. Thank Jesus for being your advocate with the Father. Ask Him to use you to accomplish great and mighty things as you seek to boldly and faithfully share the good news of salvation through Him with others.
