THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

A Summary of The Ten Commandments - Love God and Love Others.

In tonight’s message, Pastor Ken Ramey wraps up the series on the Ten Commandments by looking at how Jesus summarized God’s law: Love God and Love Others.

When confronted by the Pharisees, Jesus simplified God’s commandments by stating that the most important commands are to love God and love others. This wasn’t new, He was quoting the old testament (Deuteronomy 6:4-6, and Leviticus 19:8). The Pharisees had complicated God’s law to the point of legalism and hypocrisy and Jesus points this out by teaching that true obedience emanates from true love. And, this is a complete obedience, for this is loving with all your Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength.

Loving God and loving others are inseparable. You can’t love God if you don’t love your neighbor ( I John 4:19). Further, Paul states that if you love your neighbor, you have fulfilled the law. Love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 3:8)

The primary purpose of the Ten Commandments is not to save us, but to show us that we need to be saved (Romans 3:19). If you are truly saved, then you will have a desire to obey God. Remember, we are not saved because we keep the commandments, rather, we keep the commandments because we are saved.

In the end, we will all be found guilty of breaking every one of the commandments. It is only because Jesus perfectly obeyed them all and then stood in our place to receive the punishment we deserve, that we can be counted completely righteous before God and be saved.
