The Heartbeat of Jesus

Matthew 9:35-10:5

There have been many men over the centuries who have had great hearts for the lost, but none compare to Christ.

Jesus’s heart is our greatest example of God’s heart. How can we be like Christ?

1. He had great compassion for the lost. See Matt.14:4, 9:36, 15:32, and Luke 19:41. In the story of the woman at the well (John 4:7-42), we learn that Jesus saw the harvest when the disciples didn’t.

2. He had a plan to reach the lost. In Matt. 9:35 we see that Jesus had been living out his compassion by healing, teaching, and proclaiming the good news. He had been living out for his disciples the example they were to follow. In v.37-38 he again claims there are few workers, but many lost, and to pray for workers. In 10:1-5 we see that He then sends out the disciples to do as he had been doing.

The disciples were not “learned” men. They were ordinary people like you and me. Jesus’s plan for reaching the world is through you and me, one person at a time. God could have evangelized the world any way He wanted, but he chose you. Do you have a heart like Jesus’s?
