Finding And Leaving A Church

Selected Scriptures

Every one of us as Christians has dad to deal with the difficult, frustrating, painful, and even heart-breaking process of finding and leaving a church. But there are few decisions we make that have a greater affect on us and our families in this life and the life to come than what church we choose to attend. Today we will consider this all-important decision and take all we’ve been learning about the church and seek to apply it practically when we find ourselves in that awkward, unenviable position of having to find or leave a church.

1. FINDING A GOOD CHURCH
The members are genuinely and discernibly saved.
The gospel is accurately and unashamedly proclaimed.
God’s Word is faithfully and authoritatively preached
The leadership is properly and recognizably qualified.
Church discipline is regularly and lovingly practiced.

2. LEAVING A BAD CHURCH
There are certainly legitimate, God-honoring reasons for leaving a church, but regardless of the motivation, it means a break of covenant that was made when the church was joined in membership, so it is good to ensure that the departure is made on good terms and that the Pastor is notified and he is counseled with for advice.

Thank God for sovereignly including you in Christ’s Church. Ask Him to continue to sanctify your spots and wrinkles so you can stand before Him holy and blameless when He returns (cf. Philippians 1:6).
