Philippians 1:3-8
During our lifetimes, we develop special bonds with certain people like our family members, our neighbors, our teachers, our schoolmates, and our co-workers. Few bonds in life are stronger than those forged between members of the military who have served in combat together. Soldiers share a unique camaraderie, they are a part of a close fraternity, a band of brothers, an esprit de corps that is unmatched by few if any other groups. The apostle Paul viewed those who served alongside him in the work of the gospel as his brothers in arms, comrades, and fellow soldiers. Nothing causes a greater bond to grow between people than when they struggle and sacrifice and suffer in the trenches together for the cause of Christ. It was their mutual commitment to this great mission that forged this strong bond between Paul and the Philippians believers. In this passage, Paul shared THREE REASONS why he was so elated by them and endeared to them. This also explains the special relationship shared between a pastor and his people.
1. ASSOCIATION - He was grateful for their participation (vv. 3-5)
2. ANTICIPATION - He was confident about their salvation (v. 6)
3. AFFECTION - He was endeared by their devotion (vv. 7-8)
Praise and thank God for saving you and giving you the joy and privilege of partnering with others in the cause of Christ. Ask Him to intensify the bond you share with your leaders and ministry partners and make you even more united and committed to praising the gospel and proclaiming it to others.
