Philippians 1:19-26

When you read Paul’s letter to the Philippians, based on his joyful, peaceful tone, you might think he was writing from a cruise ship on the Mediterranean. But he was under house arrest in Rome where he was chained to a Roman soldier 24 hours a day awaiting his trial before Nero and facing the very real possibility of being executed for the cause of Christ. He was truly in a life and death situation. Nevertheless, sitting there chained to a guard and staring death in the face provided Paul a rare opportunity to contemplate his life and possible death and to communicate his internal struggle with the Philippian church. Despite his uncertainty of whether he would live or die, he was sure of at least two things and he shared them in this text. These TWO CONVICTIONS provide us with helpful insight as to how we should view our life and our death.

1. Paul was convinced that Christ would be exalted by his death (vv. 18-21)

2. Paul was convinced that the Church would be edified by his life (vv. 22-26)

Thank God for His sovereignty over everything that happens in this world and in your life. Ask Him to make it your ultimate passion that Christ would be exalted by your life no matter what happens to you and that you can honestly say that for you, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
