Being A Balanced Believer

January 8, 2017 Speaker: Ken Ramey Series: Philippians

Topic: Sanctification Passage: Philippians 2:12–13

Sunday Service

Philippians 2:12-13

These two verses have caused much confusion for Christians throughout the history of the church. We humans are prone to try to reconcile everything in our minds and rationally do away with the apparent contradictions in Scripture. Whenever we do that, we are inevitably drawn to the extremes. We tend to emphasize one doctrine or truth at the expense of some other truth that seems to contradict it. In regards to the doctrine of sanctification, the question is who is responsible for it; God or us? In this passage, Paul carefully maintained the balance between our role and God’s role in sanctification so that we would clearly understand and carefully maintain the TWO KEYS to being a balanced believer. In the end, living the Christian life is a mysterious blend of us doing what we need to do and depending on what God has already done and is doing.

1. WE NEED TO BE OBEDIENT (v. 12)

2. WE NEED TO BE DEPENDENT (v.13)

Thank God that He hasn’t left you alone to work out your salvation on your own but is accomplishing His work by the power of His Spirit who indwells you. Thank Him for not expecting you to do anything without also empowering you to do it. Ask Him to make you willing and able to obey Him and to work in you that which is pleasing to Him.
