In order to experience maximum life-change from the sermons you hear every week and ensure that God and His Word are honored and glorified through your life, you must be mindful of and faithful to FOUR RESPONSIBILITIES whenever you listen to God’s Word preached.

1. APPRECIATION (2 Timothy 4:1-4; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 10:13-17)
You must understand the gravity of hearing God’s Word preached. The importance of listening is directly linked with the importance of preaching. Therefore, the importance of preaching must first be stressed (1 Peter 4:11).

2. ANTICIPATION (Luke 8:4-21; Hebrews 3:7-13; Jeremiah 4:3)
You must prepare your heart before hearing God’s Word preached. Listening to God’s Word preached has more to do with our hearts than our ears. This is exemplified effectively by the parable of the four soils in Luke 8. How we respond to God’s Word depends on the condition of our hearts.

3. ATTENTION (Acts 17:11; Hebrews 5:11-14; 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22; John 10:2-5)
You must exercise discernment while hearing God’s Word preached. God holds us responsible to determine what we hear, that is, the preaching of God’s Word, is accurate and true (1 John 1:4). We must train ourselves to test everything we see and hear against the truth of God’s Word (John 10:2).

4. APPLICATION (Ezekiel 33:30-32; James 1:19-25; Matthew 7:24-27)
You must obey after hearing God’s Word preached. This is perhaps the most difficult part about hearing the Word preached. We must act on what a preachers says rather than how he says it. It is the content that is most important in impacting those who are hearers of the Word.

Thank God for revealing Himself and His will for your life through His Word. Ask Him to help you to always be receptive and responsive to His Word and be a doer of the Word and not just a hearer.
